ALBANY, Ga. -- Wendy Howell, who has worked at Albany Technical College since 2006, on Tuesday was named the college's new director of public relations and information.

Howell, Albany Tech's 2009 Employee of the Year, will officially begin her director duties Monday. She has worked in the school's public relations office since September 2006 as the in-house graphic designer.

"We're really trying to continue re-imaging Albany Tech and letting people know that we're more than vo-tech," said Howell, who also serves as Albany Tech's advisory committee chair for its visual communications program. "Even though we're (still a) vo-tech, there's a lot more to us than that. We have state-of-the art labs, in summer quarter we'll be offering a health information technology program, which is an associate's degree program in our health care technology division. There's just lots of new programs and the construction program continues to grow."

Since mid February, Howell had been Albany Tech's interim director since the previous director, Miloy Schwartz, left. Schwartz replaced Kathryn McPhail in September 2009 after McPhail resigned to move to Mississippi to be with her husband. McPhail has been in the job since July 2006. McPhail hired Howell as the college's first graphic designer.

Howell, 37, worked for several years out of college as the advertising special sections writer and designer for The Telegraph in Macon.

Before moving to Albany, she worked for nearly six years with a public relations firm out of Alpharetta, specializing in writing and designing corporate communications pieces for the firm's top clients. She is also the owner of her freelance graphic design firm, WH Design, which she started in 1997.

A Forsyth native, Howell earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications with a concentration in advertising and public relations in 1995 from Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville.

Howell has been married to her husband, Van, for 12 years and they have a 10-year-old daughter, Elizabeth.
