Georgia musem director lectures on Dodd

ALBANY -- The life and career of Georgia-born artist Lamar Dodd will be the subject of a special lecture by Dodd biographer and Director of the Georgia Museum of Art William Eiland Thursday at the Albany Museum of Art (AMA).

"Lamar is among the list of important artists in the state of Georgia and the nation," Eiland said in a phone interview with The Albany Herald.

In conjunction with the lecture, an exhibition of Dodd's work will be on view at the Alabny museum until May 28.

The exhibition, "Lamar Dodd: A Life of Art," includes more than 70 works by Dodd. The pieces are on loan to the museum from collector C.L. Morehead Jr., a close friend of the artist.

Eiland said his lecture will be about the work Dodd did through fully two-thirds of the 20th century.

"I hope the lecture will teach people about our immediate past and what Lamar did to capture that," he said.

Before his death in 1996, Dodd was a painter whose work reflected a love of the American South and whose style encompassed naturalism, expressionism and abstract art. Dodd was also a university teacher, administrator and advocate for the arts. His most visible legacy remains the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Albany Museum of Art.
