ALBANY, Ga. -- Gil Barrett, the man who left his indelible mark on the Dougherty County government as a 40-year member of the Dougherty County Commission, died Sunday afternoon at his home.
Barrett's daughter, Ginny Morehead of Tulsa, Okla., said Monday morning her father would always be remembered as a "Southern gentleman."
"My sister Becky (Barett) and I were so fortunate to have our dad and mom as parents," Morehead said. "They both leave a wonderful legacy in this community. It was just daddy's time, but now he's with mama again.
"Our family appreciates very much the kind thoughts and prayers, the community support everyone's shown dad since he became ill. It meant the world to him, and it means the world to his family."
Barett became ill in late September and was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Morehead said she and Becky Barrett will finalize funeral arrangements later today for Gil Barrett, whose service with the County Commission included 20 years as chairman.
