LEESBURG, Ga. -- A decade ago, residents of the Good Life City welcomed a much-anticipated Harley-Davidson dealership.
Now it appears that officials with the dealership are looking for a new home.
Although the deal is not finalized, Albany Harvey-Davidson/Buell dealership on Old Dawson Road plans to move out of Dougherty County.
Winston Oxford, executive director of the Lee County Chamber of Commerce, said the dealership would likely be moving into the now-vacant American Outdoor Adventures facility located at 1335 U.S. Highway 82 West in Lee County.
"We have not gotten approval on it yet; we are waiting to hear from the Harley people," Oxford said. "It's not a done deal, but it looks good."
This Harley Davidson development surfaces one day after the opening of a new Publix at Lee Crossings on U.S. Highway 19.
"We are a commercial designation," Oxford said. "We welcome this addition to our community, if they are indeed coming."
The dealership was opened in its present location in late 2000 by Charlie Hough of Sarasota, Fla. as Flint River Harley-Davidson. In June 2007, Martin Wilson and Vivian Smith bought Flint River Harley Inc. -- which included the Albany dealership -- from Hough.
A representative with the dealership who answered the phone Thursday confirmed it was moving to a new location. Phone messages left Thursday for Kevin Sewell, the dealership's general manager, and a representative from the Harley-Davidson corporate office seeking further comment were not returned.
