CVB's Gray puts 'heads in beds'

ALBANY, Ga. -- Liz Gray, the Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau's sales manger, has one simple, professional goal.

"My job is to put heads in beds," she told the Albany Rotary Club Thursday at Doublegate Country Club. "We have a lot to offer in Albany and we promote Albany as a destination along with enhancing our city's image.

"The CVB is totally self-funded by a seven percent motel/hotel tax. We get half of the money, the city gets the other half."

Working with a full-time staff of four, Gray says the CVB has a bevy of attractions to offer potential visitors. The recently opened Radium Springs Garden, the new meerkat exhibit at the Parks at Chehaw, Riverfront Park, the Weatherbee Planetarium, the Flint RiverQuarium and the Albany Museum of Art are, among others attractions, used to lure visitors to Albany.

"I sell Albany," Gray said. "We like to bring motor coach tours to town. Our numbers show that for every motor coach that comes into town it has an economic impact of $5,000 per day to the city."

Director Lisa Riddle said that in 2009 the organization brought more that $10 million in CVB-assisted events to Albany.

The CVB is currently making a final push for their "Wet, Wild and Out of The World" summer get away packages.

The packages, which run through Sept. 6, offer a one night stay for a family of four at one of nine Albany motels or hotels, and four tickets to the Albany Civil Rights Institute, Albany Museum of Art, Chehaw Park, The RiverQuarium and the Thronateeska Heritage Center.

The packages range in price from $110 to $149, depending on the accommodations chosen.

In an aside, Gray said talks were underway in regard to opening up The Blue Hole at Radium Springs Garden to swimming. She said nothing had been determined, but that officials were discussing the matter.
