Names released in shooting

AMERICUS, Ga. -- A traffic stop involving drugs in Americus turned violent when a woman shot herself in the head, a Sumter County Sheriff's Office report stated.

April Nicole Arrington, 34, of Vienna and Russell Eugene Bright of Whitesburg were arrested at about 1 p.m. Monday on charges of criminal intent to obtain controlled substance by fraud and possession of cocaine, the report stated.

Numerous charges are pending a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe into the case, the report stated.

According to Sheriff Pete Smith, Arrington was the subject of a continuing investigation by his office when she was stopped for a traffic violation at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

The deputy who stopped Arrington ran her information through the warrant system and found she was wanted on a drug warrant in another county.

While the deputy was in his patrol car, Arrington drew a gun and started shooting, Smith said.

"She shot out the back window and then tried to shoot herself," Smith said.

According to the bureau's investigation, Arrington shot once into the floorboardP of her car and then tried to shoot herself.

"She attempted to shoot herself while she was in the vehicle," said Danny Jackson, GBI special agent. "The bullet grazed her head and she is fine."

No information on the link between Bright and Arrington on the drug charges was immediately available Tuesday.
