ALBANY, Ga. -- A woman was found shot dead after 6:30 p.m. Thursday in a residence at 1601 Orchard Drive, stated an Albany police Department report.
"The victim's body was discovered in the master bedroom in the bed," the report stated. "It is an apparent suicide at this time."
The police did not release the name of the 67-year-old woman.
Dougherty County Coroner Emma Quimbley would only say that the woman did not suffer a head wound and the death was under investigation as a possible suicide.
According to the police report officers were called in to do a welfare check on the woman because her relatives had no contact with her in several days.
When officers arrived they knocked on the door to no answer. At the family's request police called the Albany Fire Department to assist in opening the door. After opening the door, authorities found the body.
No other information was available about the time of death or the investigation.
Thursday night at about 7:15 p.m., police responded to an unsuccessful suicide attempt when Willie Lee Leanear, 35, drove his 1994 Ford F-150 pickup into the doors of the Albany Civil Rights Institute.
Taken into custody without charges, Leanear was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital from which he was later released. Leanear's suicide attempt remains under investigation.
