ALBANY, Ga. -- A utility-pole top snapped and brought down fiber-optic wires about 1:10 p.m. Tuesday on the corner of Eighth Avenue and Madison Street, an Albany Fire Department official said.
Firefighters, the first on the scene, called Albany Police Department officers to control traffic and the Water, Gas & Light Commission for crews to make repairs.
Luckily, the two streets at the intersection had no traffic when the rotted pole snapped. The top of the pole swung down across Eighth Avenue, coming to rest hanging from wires a couple feet off the ground.
No injuries or damages to vehicles were reported as a result of the pole's snapping.
"I've been here for 24 years," said Lorie Farkas, WG&L assistant general manager for customer relations. "This is the first time I have ever heard of a rotted pole snapping."
Work crews from WG&L set to work by 1:15 p.m. The pole would be replaced and wiring either repaired or replaced, Farkas said. The services provided by the wires would be back to normal in a few hours, she added.
