ALBANY, Ga. -- As is typical during this time of year, colder weather means more house fires.
A handful of such incidents are currently under investigation -- including two fires between Saturday evening and early Monday morning.
At 8:17 p.m. Saturday, the Albany Fire Department got a call out to 3504 Wexford Drive in reference to a fire. When the AFD got there, the roof was on fire all the way across, according to reports, said Deputy Chief Ron Rowe.
Firefighters were on the scene for more than three hours, 30 minutes of which was spent getting the blaze under control. It is estimated that the fire caused $180,000 in property and content damage.
Nobody was home when the fire started. The occupant of the house is a distant relative of Fire Chief James Carswell, which requires the state fire marshall to conduct the investigation into the cause of the fire.
"It's general practice any time there is an affiliation," Rowe said.
At 2 a.m. Monday, the AFD was at the scene of 606 W. First Ave. for more than three hours to combat a fire in an abandoned duplex.
Officials said the duplex had been abandoned for some time. The fire resulted in $28,000 in damage. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
