ALBANY, Ga. -- Blunt force trauma to the head during a severe beating killed a woman in her West Gordon Avenue home before 4 p.m. Tuesday, said an Albany Police Department official.
"The husband came home and found his wife, Thelma Carter, 61, on the floor," said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman. "He called 911. We have arrested the daughter Janice Ware, 40."
Ware was taken to Dougherty County Jail and charged with aggravated assault and felony murder, Banks said. The motive for the murder was unknown, she added
The deceased woman's grandchild was taken from the scene and given to family members to care for, Banks said. No other names of the family were immediately available.
Police arrested Ware just before 5 p.m. at the 610 S. Slappey Blvd. Enmark convenience store and gas station, Banks said. The store is three blocks east of the crime scene.
More than 24 neighbors and relatives of the deceased watched as police investigated the homicide at the single-story brick house. Relatives declined to comment on the crime.
A neighbor, Quan Thomas, said, "It is just a dirty shame. That's all, just a shame."
