EDISON -- The Class A Calhoun County basketball teams got back on track Tuesday night, beating Early County in a Class AA vs. A showdown.
The Cougars won, 79-74, in a nailbiter thanks to three players scoring in double figures: Vincent Powell (28), Marquez Williams 17 and DeShawn Jordan 13.
It was enough to overcome the amazing night by the Bobcats' Ladonis Yarbrough, who finished with a game-high 35, followed by Chevious Williams and Rashun Brackens both chipping in 11.
The win by the boys team avenged an early season loss to the Bobcats, 75-59, and brought a smile to coach Marcus Shaw's face.
"We came to play this time. That was the difference," said Shaw, whose team is now 8-2. "We didn't really show up that first game."
In the girls game, which Calhoun won, 73-58, Santana Ingram scored 21, Brandi Buie added 18 and Manesha Porter dropped in 10, as CCHS overcame the 30-point night by Early's Shay Williams, 15 from Justice Lee and 11 from Ericka James.
The Cahoun girls are now 6-4 overall.

WESTWOOD BOYS, GIRLS SPLIT WITH FULLINGTON:
The Class A Westwood boys shook off a loss to a bigger Class AA SGA team last week and returned to rout another Class AA school, Fullington on Tuesday night, 62-47, behind 21 points from Jake Kotter, and 11 each from Mason Jones and John Vereen.
"It was like night and day," Westwood coach Al Timmerman said of the loss to SGA and the win vs. Fullington. "We had no heart and no emotion last week, and (Tuesday night) it was a complete reversal. I think they're finally listening to me."
The Wildcats are now 3-3.
The news was not as good for the Westwood girls (4-6), who were flattened by Fullington, 47-29. Miller Singleton was the only player to score in double figures for the Lady Wildcats, finishing with 10.
Westwood's next games will be in its home tournament Friday and Saturday, as it welcomes Brookwood, Byne and Grace Christian for the two-day event.

SEMINOLE BOYS 87, QUITMAN 59:
Kerry Chrispen scored 24, Dee Virgin added 10 and the Indians evened their record at 5-5.
Seminole's next game will be at Calhoun County's Christmas Tournament, the Wesley Burkes Invitational, which starts Friday. The Lady Indians also won, although no final score or stats were available at press time.

RANDOLPH-CLAY BOYS 75, MILLER COUNTY 64:
Shaquille Nunnally dropped in a game-high 24, Timothy Stringer-Davis added and Malcolm Jones each scored 14 as the Red Devils improved to 7-3 by outplaying the Pirates, who were led by Makel Price's 13 points. The R-C girls also won, although no final score or stats were available at press time.
