ALBANY, Ga. -- Dougherty County Commission Chairman Jeff "Bodine" Sinyard has been elected by members of a 14-county roundtable to serve as chairman of the executive committee of the regional transportation group that will oversee implementation of a new transportation initiative.
The position tops the committee created by House Bill 277 which will ultimately establish the framework, project list and call for a referendum to finance transportation projects throughout the 14-county region.
Funding generated by the one-percent transportation sales tax, if approved by voters in July 2012, will all but replace the Georgia Department of Transportation's previous project structure and funding setup which would fund projects on a statewide priority list using revenues from the state's motor fuel tax.
With revenues declining as fewer people hit the road and the federal government mandating better fuel-mileage in cars and SUV's, state officials are looking to the regional method as a better option to fund projects important to the various counties and municipalities within the region.
The executive committee's chief purpose will be to finalize the list of proposed projects that would be funded by the one-percent sales tax revenues, but will also preside over the process before the referendum is called.
