ALBANY, Ga. -- The first chance for people to win some fast cash in 2011 will happen on New Year's Day when one of two new turtle races takes place at the Flint RiverQuarium downtown.

Someone will walk away with $500 cash when plastic turtles go floating down the RiverQuarium's fountain downtown at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, aquairium spokesperson Wendy Bellacomo said.

Turtles are for sale for $5 each with package discounts available for multiple purchases. Turtles can be purchased online at flintriverquarium.com, by calling 9229) 639-2650 or by visiting the RiverQuarium downtown.

The two new races, the second of which will be held Feb. 12, will lead up to the FRQ's major race in March. And winning turtles in the two preliminary races will automatically be among those competing for the major prizes in March.

"The turtle race has been one of our biggest fundraisers and so this year we're trying something a little different by having two preliminary races before the big race," Bellacomo said.

Last year, the race in March netted $21,000 for the RiverQuarium, a nonprofit educational venue.
