Officials probing police gambling

THOMASVILLE, Ga. -- There are allegations that a traveling carnival possibly had two Pelham Police Department officers on its gambling payroll, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman said Friday.

"We are investigating the allegations that two Pelham Police (Department) officers were possibly involved in working for a carnival that participated in illegal gambling," said Steve Turner, GBI special agent-in-charge. "The investigation started about three weeks ago."

Turner said, the way the gambling worked was that when a person won a prize, say a stuffed animal, the winner could sell the animal back for cash.

The name of the carnival was not immediately available. Turner would not release the names of the police officers.
