'Crowns' to encore at Albany State

ALBANY -- Albany State University Theatre will hold a Black Heritage Month encore presentation of "Crowns" this weekend.

Performances of the stage production are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Albany State's ACAD Auditorium.

General admission is $10. Admission for Albany State faculty, staff and students providing identification is $5.

"Crowns" tells the story of a girl who is sent to live with her grandmother in the South after her brother is killed as a result of street violence.

Under the musical direction of Bishop J. Nathan Paige, the play features such musical numbers as "When the Saints Go Marching In," "This Joy That I Have," "I've Got a Crown" and "In the Mornin' (When I Rise)."

Star gazing program set for Saturday

LUMPKIN -- The Coca-Cola Space Science Center and Columbus State University will present a star-gazing program Saturday night.

The program will be held 7 p.m.-9 p.m. in the main picnic area of Providence Canyon State Park, located on Highway 39C near Lumpkin.

Admission is $5 parking pass per vehicle.

Saturday's program will include a PowerPoint presentation and telescopes set up to watch various stars, planets and additional celestial sites. Participants are welcome to bring telescopes.

Garden club names it's yard of month

ALBANY -- The home of Mrs. F.W. Guillebeau has been named the Daffodil Garden Club Yard of the Month for February.

According to Garden Club President Marideane Maxwell, the 408 Pinecrest Drive yard was selected for its display of hanging ferns, topiary trees and pots filled with pansies.

"Ride by and view the lovely home and pristine sweeping yard," she said.

Attractions to offer Valentine's Day treats

ALBANY -- Flint RiverQuarium and Thronateeska Heritage Center are joining forces for a sweet Valentine's Day.

From 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, visitors can get their sweetheart in for free when they purchase a joint ticket to both locations for $17.50.

Admission includes access to Flint RiverQuarium, a movie at the Imagination Theater, Thronateeska and a planetarium show at the Wetherbee Planetarium. Couples will also receive a sweet treat and commemorative picture at the RiverQuarium, a flower for each lady at Thronateeska and the chance to win a gift basket of goodies from each location.
