MACON -- No one knows what to expect from the Deerfield-Windsor girls basketball team. Not after what happened a year ago, when the Lady Knights shocked everyone in the GISA 3-AAA state tournament by reaching the Final Four.
"You never know what's going to happen in the state tournament,'' said DWS girls coach Ty Kinslow, whose 2009 team left the region as the fourth seed with a 10-13 record before making the stunning run. Three starters graduated, but DWS is ready for another run with a starting lineup that doesn't include a senior.
Juniors Sarah Shellhaas, Lauren Fulford and Morgan Phillips, and sophomores Sabrina Curry and Heather Lash start. Lacey Kincheloe, the team's only senior, is the sixth girl. Shellhaas (9 points, 7 rebounds) and Curry (9 points, 5 steals) lead DWS in scoring, and Fulford leads the team in assists.
The Lady Knights (20-7) meet Dominion Christian at 5:30 tonight in Macon at the First Presbyterian Day's gym.
"A lot of girls on this year's team got a lot of experience last year,'' Kinslow said. "We'll see what happens.''
SOUTHLAND: The Lady Raiders enter today's AAA tourney as the No. 3 seed out of Region 3, earning that spot after winning the consolation game in last week's GISA region tournament.
The Lady Raiders, led by leading scorer Sara Catherine Parker, open against No. 2 seed Mount Vernon Presbyterian at 4 p.m. at Stratford Academy.
SHERWOOD, SGA GIRLS: Fresh off the Lady Eagles' 49-41 win against the Lady Warriors in last week's consolation game of the region tourney, the teams turn their focus to state today.
SGA, the Region 3, No. 4 seed, opens against Region 1, No. 1 Westminster Christian at 7 p.m. at Middle Georgia, while SCA -- the Region 3, No. 3 seeds, opens against Region 1, No. 2 Brentwood at 4 p.m., also at MGC.
