LEE COUNTY -- A 5-month-old baby died 4 a.m. Tuesday after being found unresponsive by emergency personnel at a Lee County home Monday morning, officials said.
K'Laysha Holmes died at the Medical Center of Georgia in Macon, said Trebor Randle, GBI assistant special agent-in-charge. Holmes was taken to the GBI crime lab in the same city for an autopsy today, she added.
"We will not know the cause of death until after the autopsy," Randle said.
When the case opened, Randle said that there would be an ongoing investigation into allegations of neglect.
Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at 139 Mayfield Drive about 5 a.m. Monday after a call about a baby not breathing. When they arrived, the house was full of juveniles, K'Laysha and her mother, 21-year-old Nakasha Holmes, Randle has said.
The initial report stated that K'Laysha was not breathing and was in bed with her mother, Randle had reported. The homeowners were not at the house, she added.
The GBI was called in after "there appeared to be something going on that was unusual," said Lewis Harris, the Lee County chief sheriff's deputy.
No further information was available Tuesday.
