They tried, but it didn't work.
If Monroe and Westover's boys win in their Region 1-AAA semifinal games today they will meet for the third time at 8:30 Friday night at Westover, where there will no doubt be another standing-room-only crowd.
Tickets for the first two games were so difficult to get, and fans were turned away at the sold-out gyms, which created talk this week about moving the game to Darton College. But some fine print in the region rules prevent any change in the host site.
Westover won the right to host the semifinals and finals by virtue of the girls team winning the top-seed in the region, but both Westover coaches were willing to move the game.
"There was some discussion to move these games, especially if there was a Monroe-Westover boys rematch,'' Westover principal William Chunn said. "But we learned that since this is a region tournament according to the bylaws it must be played (this year) at the home of the No. 1 girls seed. If this was a regular season individual game instead of a region tournament we could do it.''
"My congratulations go out to both (girls coach) Lewis Smith and (boys coach) Dallis Smith. They both agreed to give up the home court advantage for the benefit of the fans. ''
