ALBANY -- Students in middle and high schools throughout Southwest Georgia will descend on the Good Life City this weekend for the eighth annual Southwest Georgia Model Bridge Building Contest.
The event will be held 9 a.m. Saturday at Albany State University's HPER building basketball court.
Registration is $15, with participants receiving an event T-shirt.
Held since 2002 in honor of National Engineer's Week, the contest brought 105 students from nine schools vying to build the best model bridge.
"The students get an opportunity to showcase their designs to the practicing engineers and be judge against the designs of their peers," said Atin Sinha, coordinator of engineering at Albany State.
Sponsored by the Georgia Space Grant Consortium, Saturday's contest is intended to whet students' appetite for engineering.
"ASU's engineering students help out in conducting the event," Sinha said, "and it is hoped that some of the participants will be inspired to join ASU's transfer engineering program to eventually get a degree from Georgia Tech."
