One shot during apartment robbery attempt

ALBANY -- Police are searching for an armed bandit who shot a man during an attempted robbery around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Albany Police Department spokesperson Phyllis Banks said.

John Melvin, 41, was sitting in his vehicle with Tavarus Wellborne, 26, at WestWind Apartments on the 2400 block of Dawson Road when a unidentified man approached the two men and demanded money, police said.

According to police reports, the gunman had an unknown make and model of gun in his hand.

"At some point, the suspect fired one shot that struck Melvin in the hand," said Banks.

She said Wellborne was able to get out of the car without suffering any injuries.

Melvin was transported to the hospital and treated for his injuries to his hand.

Banks said nothing was taken from Melvin and Wellborne. After shooting Melvin in the hand, the assailant ran away.

The gunman was described as a dark-skinned black man in his late teens or early twenties with a slender build and of average height. He was wearing a black shirt and black hat.

Police said anyone with any information concerning this incident should call CrimeStoppers at (229) 436-TIPS or the Albany Police Department at (229) 431-2100.
