2009 All-Area Boys Cross Country Team

Greg Thorne, Westover, Jr.

STATS: Thorne finished third in the super-tough GHSA Region 1-AAA meet, and was named to the All-Region Team. He ran a scorching best time of 17:27 in 2009. This was Thorne's first year ever running cross country.


Bridger Ferrell, Westover, Jr.

STATS: Ferrell, the winner of the 2007 Herald Player of the Year for boys cross country, had another stellar year, finishing fourth at Region 1-AAA meet and posting the third best time of any runner in the area all year at 17:13. Also named to All-Region Team for third year in a row. Was named Team MVP.


Cole Koster, Westover, Jr.

STATS: Koster posted the third fastest individual time of any runner in Southwest Georgia this season at 17:12, but was behind his two other All-Area teammates at region, finishing fifth. He was also named to the All-Region Team for second team.


Cody Heard, Bainbridge, Sr.

STATS: Heard posted the second fastest time of any Southwest Georgia runner all season at 17:06. He struggled to a 4th place finish at the Region 1-AAAA Championships, but it was still good enough to be named to the All-Region Team.


Bryton Wenzel, Baconton, Fr.

STATS: Wenzel was the GHSA Region 1-A individual low medalist and was the leader of the Blazers' Region 1A Championship team with a

time of 18:05.


Clay Ferguson, Randolph So., Sr.

STATS: Ferguson was the GISA Region 3-A champion with a personal best time of 18:51, and was the leader of the Patriots' first-ever GISA Region 3-A championship team in school history. Ferguson was undefeated against Class A competition in seven meets, and finished in the Top 10 in all meets he competed in. Unfortunately, Ferguson was injured in basketball practice and was unable to compete in state meet.

Jacob Kennedy, Lee County, So.

STATS: Kennedy won the Region 1-AAAA championship for the first time after coming in the Top 5 as a freshman. His personal best time was 16:57 --- the fastest time of any area runner this season.


Ofe Ariyo, Deerfield, 8th Grade

STATS: Running behind Herald POY Taylor Withers all season, Ariyo posted a personal best time of 18:28 when he finished fifth overall at the prestigious Disney World Classic Cross Country in October in Orlando. Ariyo also finished second behind Withers at the Region 3-AAA Championships and 11th overall at state, helping lead the Knights to a 4th-place overall finish --- the best by a Knights boys team in school history. Also named to All-Region Team.
