The Georgia Department of Labor today announced that it will present Dougherty County with a $25,000 development grant to attract a new industry to the former Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. plant on Sylvester Road.
State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond's office said Thurmond will present the to the Albany-Dougherty County Economic Development Commission at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the EDC board room, 225 W. Broad Ave.
The commission will use the grant for marketing to attract new industry to the idled plant.
State Rep. Winfred Dukes of Albany said, "As a community, we are very appreciative that Commissioner Thurmond and the Georgia Department of Labor are providing this much-needed funding. The creation of jobs and employing our people is the number one issue facing our local leadership. A similar grant to Lumpkin County enabled its economic development authority to attract a buyer for a building vacated by a textile manufacturer. The new food manufacturer will initially employ 150 workers and plans to eventually have 1,000 employees. We are optimistic that we will have the same kind of success here in Albany."
