The end of a decade marks a new era in The Albany Herald's sports department.
Award-winning sportswriter Mike Phillips, who spent the last 25 years at The Miami Herald in South Florida, joined The Herald's sports staff this week, replacing outgoing award-winning sportswriter, Paul Dehner Jr.
Phillips joins longtime Herald sportswriter Scott Chancey, who has been with the paper eight years, and sports editor Danny Aller, who is entering his third year on the job.
"It's great to be in Albany," said Phillips, who will primarily be responsible for covering The Herald's 24 area high schools. "I'm glad I brought my coat."
Phillips, a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas in 1976, worked for three years at the Palestine (Texas) Herald Press before heading to Miami, where he covered everything from prep sports to the Florida Marlins, Miami Heat, the University of Miami and the University of Florida.
