Marion Sweet, 47, was convicted of aggravated assault on a peace officer and obstruction of police Tuesday afternoon, prosecutor Matt Breedon said.

"Obviously we're happy with the decision," Breedon said. "This just goes to show you that when you attack a police officer, you'll get the maximum penalty."

Sweet was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison -- 10 of which he'll actually have to serve before he's eligible for parole.

Sweet was convicted of viciously attacking officer McKinley Windom at Palmyra Nursing home after Sweet refused to leave, Breedon said. When he refused to leave the facility, police ran his information and discovered he was wanted on outstanding warrants. When they attempted to arrest him, he pulled a knife and stabbed Windom in the chest at least 6 times, but a bullet-proof vest saved his life, Breedon said.

Sweet has past convictions of felony forgery, aggravated assault and arson.
