MACON -- The opening round of the GHSA State Wrestling Duals didn't go that well for Southwest Georgia's lone two representatives Friday.
Lee County lost, 53-21, to Alexander, but got wins from Zach Thomspon (112 pounds, by pin) Ben Graham (145, decision), Danny McCray (160, pin) and Colton Grove (189, pin).
"It was really nip and tuck before we got past the lightweights," said Lee County coach Phil Maxfield, whose team will turn around today and face Cross Creek in the losers' bracket at 8:15 a.m. "But I had three 125s that I had to move up a class or two -- and it wasn't pretty after that."
If Lee County wins this morning, it will then face Woodland, Henry, which came in as a No. 1 seed, but was knocked off in the first round by Rockdale.
"I think we can win our match (today) then we'll see what happens," Maxfield said. "Credit to my guys (Friday), though. They hit the mat against a tough team and held their own for a little while."
The area's other representative, Westover, was crushed by Jackson, 68-9, but no other details were available. The Patriots now face Troup County today.
