Singletary, the former owner of Blakely Peanut Company, was found dead just after 8 a.m., Special-Agent-in-Charge Mike Lewis said.
His body has been taken to Atlanta for an autopsy in an effort to determine the manner of his death. Lewis said it appeared he had been shot with a shotgun, which was recovered at the scene.
Blakely Peanut Company was owned by the Singletary's until it was bought by Universal Leaf Tobacco out of Richmond, Va., in 1984. At that time, Marvin S. Singletary was to remain on as president of the company following the acquisition.
In 1992, Birdsong, another Virginia-based company, bought Blakely Peanut Company. Earlier this month, the Occupational Safety and Health Organization or OSHA, issued a $137,000 fine against Birdsong following a death in the summer of 2009 at the Blakely plant.
In 1987, Singletary was named by Governor Joe Frank Harris to chair the Growth Strategy Commission's economic task force. The group issued a report to Harris in 1988 about the sustainibility of economic development in Georgia.
Singletary is the husband of Henrietta Singletary, the former deputy to the assistant secretary of agriculture for rural development during the Carter administration.
