Fire erupts on Covenant Presbyterian Church sign

ALBANY -- An early morning fire in a sign at the Covenant Presbyterian Church lit up the side of Dawson Road Wednesday.

There were no injuries, and the church at 2126 West Edgewater Drive near Lake Loretta was not harmed, said Albany Fire Department Deputy Chief Ron Rowe.

An electrical short caused the sign to erupt in flames at about 6:12 a.m., Rowe said. Firefighters used 50 gallons of water and had the fire out at 6:18 a.m.

"There was probably about $2,000 damage to the sign," Rowe said. "If they replace it, it will have to be inspected."

It was too soon to know if the sign would be replaced, said Tim Olds, the church's associate pastor. The church has a board of elders that would have to be part of the decision process, he added.

The sign wasn't elaborate, Olds said. It was pretty much a fluorescent light that cast light down onto a black background that had white hand-placed letters in slots.

"This just happened this morning," Olds said. "We will take our time to decide what to do."
