Money back in for Moultrie GBI crime lab

ALBANY, Ga. -- The Albany Herald has learned that the governor has agreed to fund GBI crime labs in Moultrie and Columbus.

In a decision made Wednesday after meeting with House Speaker David Ralston and others leaders who wanted to see the legislative-directed funds used for the crime labs, Gov. Sonny Perdue directed that the funding for the labs be used as the Legislature directed.

Ralston sent out a memo this afternoon regarding the governor's decision.

State Rep. Ed Rynders, R-Leesburg, whose district includes parts of Colquitt County, confirmed that the money was back in for the labs. The Legislature had included $400,000 to rehabilitate the closed GBI lab in Moultrie.

"Public safety's always been the top priority of mine," Rynders said in a phone interview this afternoon. "During a tough year, health, education and public safety were a priority of the Legislature. I'm appreciative of the decision the governor made."
