One injured, one-arrested in officer-involved shooting

Although details are still sketchy, police officials say that just before 6 p.m. Monday, two armed men walked into the Family Dollar on West Gordon Avenue brandished their guns in what is believed to have been an armed robbery.

Nearby officers heard the call go out and responded in time to see the subjects exciting the store with a female employee being held as a hostage, APD Spokesperson Phyllis Banks said.

After ignoring verbal commands from the officers, one suspect was shot by police and the female hostage released. After a short foot chase through a nearby field, the second suspect was apprehended, Banks said.

APD Standard Operating Procedure states that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is to be called in to investigate any officer-involved shootings.

Banks confirmed Monday night that agents with the GBI were in route to investigate the shooting and interview the officer, whose identity has not yet been released.

Neither suspect — the one shot or the one arrested — have been identified, although Banks did say that police have received word from medical staff that the injuries to the suspect are not believed to be life threatening.
