Police officials investigate the area near where a shooting occurred on West Gordon Avenue Monday afternoon.
ALBANY, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating what police are calling an officer-involved shooting following the armed robbery of a dollar store Monday afternoon.
One suspect has been arrested and the other is recovering from being shot by an Albany police officer after authorities say that the officer nearly interrupted an armed robbery attempt off West Gordon Avenue around 6 p.m. Monday evening.
APD spokesperson Phyllis Banks says that two armed men are believed to have entered the Family Dollar on the 900 block of West Gordon Avenue just before 6 p.m.
Brandishing their guns, the pair allegedly demanded money from store employees while at least 10 customers were inside the store shopping.
Nearby officers heard the call and responded as two men were leaving the building. Banks said that initial indications are that one of the suspects was holding a female employee hostage while the other had a handgun.
Despite repeated verbal commands from police, the two failed to comply and an officer shot one of the suspects on the sidewalk near the store. The second suspect released the hostage and tried to flee on foot through a nearby field before being arrested.
The suspect who was shot was taken to a local hospital, where he was believed to be recovering; the injuries sustained by the suspect are not expected to be life-threatening, Banks said.
The second suspect was arrested and taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning.
Under APD's Standard Operating Procedure, any officer-involved shooting triggers the notification of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who then begins a use-of-force review to determine whether the officer's actions were proper.
The officer was asked to go to the law enforcement center for an interview with GBI agents, Banks said.
Two guns and other evidence was collected at the scene, Banks said, and neither the identities of the two suspects nor the officer had been released Monday night.
