ALBANY, Ga. -- Elections officials have opened a second voting site downtown at 125 Pine Ave. for the advance voting period this week, officials say.

The advance voting period started Monday and will end Friday ahead of Tuesday's primary election.

Voters can cast their ballots early for any reason this week or can wait until election day on Tuesday. The hours this week are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Polls will be open Tuesday 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Turnout has been slow during the 45-day early voting period, election officials say, with statewide totals hovering only around the 1 percent mark.

The building is located between the Flint RiverQuarium and The Albany Herald parking lot on Pine Avenue. The voting will be conducted in the Candy Room.

In Dougherty County, voters countywide who take a Democratic ballot can choose between state Rep. Carol Fullerton and challenger Freddy Grimsley for the House District 151 seat Fullerton now holds.

District 6 Democratic voters have two other local races to decide, one for County Commission between Commissioner Jack Stone and challenger Richard Thomas and one for School Board between Darrel Ealum and Dean Phinazee.

Democratic voters in District 2 have a School Board seat to decide between incumbent Milton Griffin and challenger Sherrell Byrd. The winner will face Republican Donnie Smith in November.

The only local race on the Republican ballot will be choosing a challenger to face U.S. Rep Sanford Bishop, D-Albany, in November. Vying for the GOP nomination for the Second Congressional District seat are Rick Allen of Columbus, Lee Ferrell of Albany and Mike Keown of Coolidge.

All of the statewide offices, including governor, attorney general and insurance commissioner will be up for grabs this year. Both the Democratic and Republican ballots have multiple candidates for most of those races.
