Worker accused of stealing from church

ALBANY -- A Dougherty County employee was arrested on 26 warrants by the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office on Monday afternoon, Capt. Craig Dodd said.

Yolanda Pope, 52, was released on $5,000 bond after being processed at the downtown sheriff's office, said a Dougherty County Jail spokeswoman. Pope didn't spend a night in jail, she added.

"We arrested her on GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) warrants," Dodd said. "She has 21 counts of theft by financial fraud charges and six theft by taking charges. All the charges are felonies."

Pope stands accused of stealing about $6,000 from a church where she was the bookkeeper, said Mike Lewis, GBI special agent in charge. Lewis was on the road when reached and could not access the files to identify the Dougherty County church.

"She had an ATM card without permission from her church to have it," Lewis said. "She was using it from about 2007. Theft of this kind is not as unusual as it should be."
