Mathis gets indicted

LEESBURG -- A Lee County grand jury indicted Craig Mathis on Monday on one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and a second count of possession of a controlled substance, according to court documents.

The indictment stems from a March 19 arrest. At the time of his arrest, it was reported that the Lee County attorney was in possession of five amphetamine dextroamphetamine pills, which are a Schedule II controlled substance, and 47 Alprazolam pills. Among the pills in Mathis' possession were Adderall and Xanax.

Lee County Sheriff's officials said Mathis was arrested during a sting operation at a Lee County residence.

The drug charges were brought against Mathis by agents attached to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Sylvester office.

Mathis was a licensed and practicing attorney in Lee County before Magistrate Judge Jim Thurmon banned Mathis from practicing law until the completion of the case.

The attorney in the past has served as a prosecutor.
