Saturday's wine tasting to benefit cancer research

ALBANY, Ga. -- A breast cancer group plans to host a wine tasting event in order to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Jamie Towe, team leader of the Perky with a Purpose Atlanta 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk team, said this will be the fourth year the team has participated in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk.

The 60-mile cancer walk takes place in Atlanta over a three-day period during October, which is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Towe said her team of 10 women is dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research and the wine tasting fundraiser is just one of many the team conducts throughout the year.

"Over the past four years the team has raised around $80,000 for research, but it isn't about how much you do, it's the fact that you do it," she said.

Guests who attend the wine tasting event will be able to sample wines donated from Still Pond Vineyard and Winery in Arlington. Items will also be available to bid on at a silent auction Perky with a Purpose will be holding during the wine tasting.

Towe said many local businesses have contributed to the silent auction and guests will also be able to bid on Atlanta Braves tickets or tickets to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.

"The event is about mixing wine tasting with a little bit of information about breast cancer. All funds go towards breast cancer research.

We (Perky with a Purpose) try to do things down here for Southwest Georgia because it is important to get the word out there," said the Perky with a Purpose team leader.

The wine tasting event will be held Saturday at The Ocala House located at 582 Highway 32 East in Leesburg from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m..

The event is open to the public and tickets are $20 per person.
