ALBANY, Ga. -- Three hours after a hardware store owner was shot in the shoulder during a robbery, four men bought Ralph Lauren Polo shirts with his credit card.

"We have surveillance video of four black men using Walter Phelps' credit card to buy shirts," said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Department spokeswoman. "We would like the community to help us identify the men."

Robbers shot Phelps, the owner of P&P Hardware, 2500 N. Slappey Blvd., at 8 a.m. on July 3. He remains in good condition at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, said a hospital spokeswoman.

Three men went on a buying spree with his credit card, dumping $1,000 worth of shirts on the counter, Banks said. Two of the men wore white T-shirts, while another wore a pale blue T-shirt at the Lake Park outlet store. The fourth man wore a white knit shirt.

Banks said that later the same day the men returned to the store and bought $1,200 worth of apparel to make a $2,200 haul on Phelps stolen credit card.

The fourth man hung back near the front door of the store leaning against a wall during the shopping frenzy. He may have been a lookout, Banks said.

Anyone with additional information on the four men should call Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS (8477) or investigations at (229) 431-3288. The Spanish speaking APD-COP Tip Line is (229) 434-2677.
