MACON, Ga. -- The Albany Herald won five awards Saturday in the annual news writing and photo contest sponsored by the Georgia Associated Press Association.
Ethan Fowler, the Herald's education writer, placed third in the Beat Reporting category for his coverage of education issues. Fowler also placed third in the Freedom of Information category for a story on "Teacher Falsifies Credentials."
J.D. Sumner, the Herald's government reporter, placed third in the public service category for his story on "Downtown Manager Fiasco."
Joe Bellacomo won a third place award in the photo portfolio category.
The Herald also won a second place award in the Editorial Writing category. The winning entry on "Dougherty Quartet's Action a Blow to Democracy," was written by Herald Editor Jim Hendricks.
The Herald competes in the class AAA category.
In a meeting of the Georgia AP New Council prior to the awards banquet, Herald Managing Editor Danny Carter was elected second vice president of the organization. Jim Healy of the Statesboro Herald was named president. Susan Catron of the Savannah Morning News was elected first vice president. The news council acts as a liaison between the Associated Press and Georgia member newspapers.
