ALBANY, Ga. -- A child threw a kitchen knife, which cut another child and led to charges of aggravated assault, said an Albany Police Department official.
Shavara Gaines, 8, suffered a cut to the stomach, said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman. She was taken to a hospital, treated and later released to her parents, Banks added.
"Officers responded to the 700 block of Crawford Drive at 9:21 p.m. Monday in reference to a stabbing," Banks said. "When they arrived they learned that the suspect retrieved a knife from the house and threw it."
The suspect, a 12-year-old girl, whose name police did not release, was charged with aggravated assault and released to her parents custody, Banks said.
The 12-year-old mistakenly believed her brother was attacked by Gaines, Banks said. That apparently caused the suspect to throw the knife at Gaines, she added.
