ALBANY, Ga. -- After a search at an apartment complex, officers arrested a third man in connection with the July 3 shooting and robbery of an Albany businessman, said an Albany Police Department official.
The man arrested could be the shooter, but because the investigation continues police aren't saying.
"Jordan Harris is the individual who has been charged with committing the armed robbery and aggravated assault that occurred at P & P (Garden & Hardware Center)," said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman.
Harris, 20, is in Dougherty County Jail charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a crime and theft by receiving stolen property, a jail spokeswoman said. He has no bail set, she added.
Harris joins Ezekiel James, 19, and Jamon Carter, 20, in jail on charges stemming from the shooting and robbery of Walter Phelps at his hardware store, stated police reports. Harris is the only one, so far, charged with having a gun at the scene of the crime.
Phelps, 67, was treated for a gunshot wound at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. He was released from the hospital July 24, said a hospital spokeswoman.
The case remains open. Police plan two additional arrests, Banks said. Information from the community continues to help police in their search for the robbers.
"Robbery Homicide Detectives, members of the Gang Unit and officers with the Uniform Bureau went into an apartment complex on the 2300 block of West Gordon Avenue after developing information on a suspect," Banks said. "A search concluded with them successfully making contact with their primary suspect. Jordan Harris was taken into custody without incident."
A jail spokeswoman said Carter's mother, Gloria Davis, 40, was released on a $2,500 bond Tuesday after being charged with tampering with evidence regarding the case. Police would not elaborate on the evidence tampering charges in the Phelps shooting.
While Phelps was opening his 2500 N. Slappey Blvd. hardware store at about 8 a.m., a robber shot him in the shoulder.
Three hours after the shooting, four men bought Ralph Lauren Polo shirts with Phelps' credit card at a Lake Park store. Harris was the one on a store surveillance video paying for $2,200 worth of Polo apparel with Phelps card, Banks said.
