State organization to host health fair in Albany

ALBANY -- Officials from the state level are continuing to do their part to ensure Southwest Georgia is a healthier place to live.

The Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia is hosting a health fair at the Albany State University HPER Gym.

The event will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, and has been dubbed "Health, It's a Family Affair" Expo.

At the health fair, there will be blood pressure and body mass index screenings for adults as well as games and activities for children.

"We want to do this for the community," said Tonya Greene, outreach coordinator for Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies. "Our mission is to help residents of Georgia have access to health care.

"We want the best for the residents of Albany."

The first 100 children to make an appearance with an adult at the event will receive free school supplies.

The organization hosts events in Savannah and Albany once a year. Its last Albany health fair was in August 2009, which drew roughly 150 people.

"We are hoping there will be a little more than last year," Greene said. "We hope the community will participate because it's not for us.

"This is our opportunity to give back."

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies is a nonprofit organization that aims to improve health via education, public forums, advocacy and direct service programs. They have a satellite office at the Dougherty County Health Department.
