ALBANY, Ga. -- Three children escaped from a fire at an Albany home at about 1:10 p.m. Thursday, said an Albany Fire Department official.
Firefighters arrived at 1412 E. Fourth Ave. to encounter smoke and flames pouring from the three- bedroom, single-story home, said Sam Harris, fire department investigator.
With six trucks and about 20 firefighters responding to the blaze, the fire was put under control by 1:38 p.m., Harris said. No one was injured.
"A 14-year-old girl was watching the children, a 6-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy. Her grandmother just stepped out to go to the store five minutes before the fire started," Harris said. "The 4-year-old boy just left the walk-in closet in the northwest corner of the house where the fire started. The 14 year old got them out safely."
Harris ruled out an electrical cause for the fire. The cause remained undetermined at 5 p.m. and remains under investigation, he said.
The home sustained about $40,000 in damage, Harris said.
"About 35 to 40 percent of the house had fire damage," Harris said. "All of the house had smoke damage."
