ALBANY, Ga. -- Trash bags found filled with sensitive documents including social security numbers could garner an Albany Police Department captain a 30-day, unpaid suspension.
Police Chief John Proctor recommended to Albany City Manager Alfred Lott that Capt. Earnest Williams be suspended without pay for 30 days, said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman. In addition to his regular police duties, Williams is a bodyguard for Albany Mayor Willie Adams.
Williams appealed Proctor's decision Thursday to Lott, said Wes Smith, assistant city manager. Now Lott has 10 days to decide whether to accept the recommendation.
"The offense was the mishandling of city documents," Smith said. "He (Lott) has the absolute authority to accept or alter the recommendation."
A city resident found trash bags filled with documents listing the names of police officers, social security numbers and other possibly sensitive information on March 15. The bags were found near Williams' home.
The suspension recommendation comes after Proctor launched an investigation by the police Internal Affairs Unit. A phone call to Williams at police headquarters was not immediately returned.
