NCAA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: FIU's Wittels extends hit streak; FSU, Auburn, Ga. Tech all win

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Florida International's Garrett Wittels extended his hitting streak to 55 games, one of the few mistakes Texas A&M pitcher Barret Loux made as the Aggies beat the Golden Panthers 17-3 on Friday in the opening game of the Coral Gables Regional.

Wittels finished 1 for 4 and moved within three games of matching Robin Ventura's Division I record 58-game hitting streak with a sixth-inning double for FIU (36-24).

Adam Smith, Joe Patterson, Matt Juengel and Brodie Greene all homered and drove in three runs apiece for the Aggies (41-19-1). Kevin Gonzalez also homered for Texas A&M, which had a season-high 20 hits.

Loux (11-2) gave up six hits and struck out 10 in eight innings.

Jabari Henry hit a pinch-hit solo homer for the Golden Panthers.

Miami 12, Dartmouth 8

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Harold Martinez hit his 20th home run in a six-run first inning, Michael Broad drove in four runs and Miami took an 11-run lead before holding on for a win.

Chris Pelaez finished with four RBIs for the Hurricanes (41-17), who play Texas A&M in a winners' bracket game Saturday.

Joe Scalfani hit a pair of home runs for Dartmouth (26-18), which scored four times in the eighth and tacked on two more in the ninth. The Big Green will play Florida International on Saturday in an elimination game.

Hurricanes starter Eric Whaley threw four shutout innings and Joey Lovecchio (1-0) got the win in relief.

Kyle Hendricks (4-6) took the loss.

Norwich Regional

Florida St. 11, Central Connecticut St. 3

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) -- Brian Busch allowed one earned run over 6 2-3 innings to lead Florida State past Central Connecticut State.

The Seminoles (43-17) trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but took advantage of a walk and a hit batter to lead off the inning. With two outs, Mike McGee laced a two-run single to center to give Florida State the lead for good.

Starter Dave Krasnowiecki allowed one run for the Blue Devils (33-22) until McGee's hit in the fifth. Danny Hickey had two RBIs for Central Connecticut, which faces host Connecticut in an elimination game Saturday.

Oregon 5, Connecticut 3

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) -- Oregon had four straight bunts to start the ninth inning and scored three runs to beat UConn.

The Huskies (47-15) scored a run in the bottom of the ninth before the Ducks' Madison Boer struck out George Springer with a runner at third for his fourth save -- all in the last four games.

Oregon (39-22) plays Florida State in the winners' bracket.

Myrtle Beach Regional

Coastal Carolina 6, Stony Brook 0

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Cody Wheeler threw a six-hit shutout as Coastal Carolina began the NCAA tournament with a victory over Stony Brook.

Wheeler (11-0) struck out the first two batters in the ninth before Maxx Tissenbaum grounded out off the pitcher's leg. That finished Wheeler's second complete game this season and kept the Chanticleers (52-7) in prime position at the regional. They play College of Charleston on Saturday.

Stony Brook (29-26), the America East Conference champs, faces an elimination game against North Carolina State.

College of Charleston 9, North Carolina State 6

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Jose Rodriguez had four hits including a long solo homer for College of Charleston.

Rodriguez hit his 16th homer in the sixth inning, clearing the bleachers in left at BB&T Coastal Field and helping the Cougars (43-17) advance into the winner's bracket.

The Wolfpack (38-23) trailed 7-0 after five innings, but got as close as 8-6 after Drew Poulk's grand slam in the eighth.

North Carolina State had two on with one out and the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but reliever Owen Brittle got the final two outs for his fourth save.

Austin Regional

Louisiana-Lafayette 1, Rice 0

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Zach Osborne threw a five-hitter as Louisiana-Lafayette shut down Rice.

Osborne (9-4) gave up five hits, walked two and struck out four for the Cajuns (38-20). In the sixth, he hit Diego Seastrunk to load the bases with two outs, but was able to get out of the jam with his third strikeout of the game.

Osborne again found himself in a jam the next inning. After two quick outs to start the inning, he gave up back-to-back singles to Steven Sultzbaugh and Chad Mozingo before forcing Jimmy Comerota into one of eight groundouts by the Owls (38-22), who play Rider in an elimination game Saturday.

Texas 11, Rider 0

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Brandon Workman pitched a five-hitter and Texas hit three home runs.

Workman (12-1) got 16 ground outs, two double play balls and seven strikeouts to dominate Rider (36-22). The right-hander faced 34 batters and threw 130 pitches.

The Longhorns got all 11 runs with two outs, scoring four runs in the third, two in the fourth and five in the seventh. All but two Texas starters had hits, highlighted by a two-run home run from catcher Cameron Rupp, a solo shot from Jordan Etier and a three-run shot from Russell Moldenhauer.

Texas (47-11) will play Louisiana Lafayette on Saturday.

Auburn Regional

Clemson 10, Southern Miss 1

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Will Lamb went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs to help Clemson cruise to a victory over Southern Mississippi.

Scott Weismann allowed four hits and one run over seven innings for the Tigers (39-21), who scored six runs in the sixth inning. Weismann (7-2) struck out six and walked one before exiting after a 34-minute rain delay going into the eighth.

Tyler Koelling drove in the only run for Southern Miss (35-23) with a double in the fifth.

Auburn 9, Jacksonville State 7

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Justin Fradejas, Dan Gamache and Casey McElroy each homered to lead Auburn.

The top-seeded Tigers (41-19), who led the nation in home runs, scored in each of the last six innings after failing to get a baserunner in the first three.

Austin Hubbard pitched the final two innings for his 10th save to set up a matchup with Clemson on Saturday night.

Todd Cunningham went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs to lead Jacksonville State (32-25), which plays Southern Miss.

Columbia Regional

Citadel 7, Virginia Tech 2

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- David Greene hit a two-run homer, Bryan Altman had three of The Citadel's 13 hits, and the Bullldogs beat Virginia Tech.

Matt Talley gave up eight hits and struck out three in seven innings for The Citadel (43-20).

Sean Ryan had a two-run homer with two outs in the seventh for the Hokies (38-21).

South Carolina 9, Bucknell 5

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer in a five-run eighth inning to rally top-seeded South Carolina to a victory.

The Gamecocks (44-15) trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Bradley capped the rally with his 10th home run. Adrian Morales later added a three-run home run in the inning.

The Gamecocks next play The Citadel.

Michael Roth (1-1) earned the win with 3 1-3 innings of hitless relief.

Bucknell (25-34) plays Virginia Tech in an elimination game Saturday.

Fayetteville Regional

Arkansas 19, Grambling St. 7

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Brett Eibner slugged three of Arkansas' school-record nine home runs in the Razorbacks' victory over Grambling State.

Collin Kuhn, James McCann and Andy Wilkins each homered twice for the Razorbacks.

Arkansas (41-18) scored six runs in the first inning and led 11-1 after three against the Tigers (22-31), who allowed at least 10 runs for the 25th time this season.

Sam Murphy (1-2) got the win by throwing 2 1-3 innings of relief.

Washington State 8, Kansas State 6

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Cody Bartlett's two-run homer with two out in the eighth inning lifted Washington State.

The Cougars (35-20) rallied from a 6-3 deficit with three runs in the seventh, then took the lead on Bartlett's shot to left-center off Wildcats reliever James Allen (5-1).

Washington State advances to play Arkansas on Saturday night, while Kansas State (36-21) will take on Grambling State in an elimination game.

Connor Lambert (5-1) struck out the only man he faced in the eighth and got the win. Adam Conley pitched a hitless ninth for his 12th save.

Norman Regional

Oklahoma 7, Oral Roberts 6, 10 innings

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Chris Ellison knocked a single off second baseman Colby Price's glove in the 10th inning, lifting Oklahoma over Oral Roberts.

Cody Reine, who tied the score at 6-6 with a solo homer in the eighth, singled with one out in the 10th and scored the winning run for the Sooners (45-15).

Trailing 5-1 after five innings, Oral Roberts (35-26) pulled ahead with a five-run sixth on Tyler Saladino's three-run homer and Seth Fermanek's two-run shot.

North Carolina 12, California 3

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Dillon Hazlett and Ben Bunting homered to back strong pitching by Matt Harvey.

The Tar Heels (37-20) will meet top-seeded Oklahoma in a winner's bracket game Saturday. California (29-24) will face Oral Roberts in an elimination game.

Cal starter Justin Jones (10-6) failed to get an out in the first inning and Hazlett's home run highlighted a six-run first for the Tar Heels. Bunting hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

Harvey (8-3) worked six innings, gave up two runs on four hits.

Fort Worth Regional

Arizona 10, Baylor 9

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Alex Mejia drove in four runs to lead Arizona over Baylor.

Trailing 10-4, Baylor (34-23) scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning before Bryce Bandilla got Raynor Campbell to hit a fly ball to end the game with two runners on base.

The Wildcats (34-22) took advantage of three Baylor errors to score five unearned runs in the sixth inning and take an 8-4 lead.

TCU 16, Lamar 3

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Taylor Featherston and Aaron Schultz both had three hits and three RBIs to lead TCU.

The Horned Frogs (47-11) scored 11 runs while batted around in both the fifth and sixth innings. Kyle Winkler (11-1) allowed one run in six innings to win his fourth consecutive start.

Lamar (35-25) will face Baylor in an elimination game on Saturday. TCU plays Arizona.

Charlottesville Regional

Virginia 15, VCU 4

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- John Hicks had four hits and drove in four runs as Virginia cruised past Virginia Commonwealth.

Tyler Cannon added three hits and three RBI and Dan Grovatt also drove in three as the Cavaliers (48-11) pounded Rams ace Seth Cutler-Voltz and four relievers for 16 hits.

The Rams (34-25-1), in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007, did all their scoring in two innings.

Mississippi 10, St. John's 5

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Drew Pomeranz scattered seven hits over seven-plus innings for Mississippi.

The Rebels (39-22) advanced to play host Virginia in a winner's bracket game Saturday, while the Red Storm (40-19) will take on Virginia Commonwealth in an elimination game.

Pomeranz (9-2), expected to be one of the top picks in Monday's amateur draft, got all the runs he needed in the second on a grounder by Kevin Mort and a triple by Tanner Mathis.

Kyle Hansen (8-2) allowed seven hits and six runs in four innings for St. John's.

Atlanta Regional

Alabama 11, Elon 2

ATLANTA (AP) -- Josh Rutledge and Clay Jones homered, Nathan Kilcrease (7-2) pitched seven strong innings and Alabama beat Elon.

The Crimson Tide (38-22) have won nine of 10, while Elon (38-23) has lost three of four. Rain caused a 1-hour, 21-minute rain delay in middle of the seventh.

Rutledge's ninth homer, a three-run shot, was part of a six-run fourth that made it 8-0 and chased Jimmy Reyes (10-4).

Georgia Tech 10. Mercer 0

ATLANTA (AP) -- Mark Pope pitched a five-hitter and Tony Plagman homered twice for Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets (46-13) will play Alabama on Saturday.

Pope (8-1) had 10 strikeouts and no walks and threw 110 pitches, 71 for strikes. The right-hander's shutout was the first for the Yellow Jackets in a regional since Kyle Bakker in 2002.

Mercer (37-23), making its first NCAA tournament appearance, plays Elon in an elimination game.

Jay Dantzler and Jacob Esch homered for the Jackets off starter Brandon Love (8-4).

Gainesville Regional

Oregon State 6, Florida Atlantic 4

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Tyler Smith homered and had an RBI single to lead Oregon State to a victory against Florida Atlantic.

The Beavers (32-22), ranked early in the year before slipping out of contention in the Pac-10, won for the 11th time in 16 games. Greg Peavey (6-3) allowed two runs in 6 1-3 innings for the Beavers.

Florida Atlantic (35-23) lost its third straight as ace Mike Gipson (8-2) was tagged for six runs.

Florida 7, Bethune-Cookman 3

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Hudson Randall pitched seven strong innings, Nolan Fontana and Matt den Dekker drove in two runs apiece for Florida.

The Southeastern Conference champions jumped on the Wildcats with a four-run second inning Friday night and put the game away with three unearned runs in the sixth. The Gators (43-15) improved to 29-3 at home this season and advanced to play Oregon State on Saturday.

Bethune-Cookman (35-21), which fell to 1-19 in regional play, will face Florida Atlantic in an elimination game.

Randall (8-3) allowed six hits and three runs in 7 1-3 innings and winning his sixth consecutive decision.

Louisville Regional

Vanderbilt 8, Illinois St. 7, 13 innings

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Pitcher Jack Armstrong's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 13th gave Vanderbilt the win over Illinois State.

Armstrong's winning hit came in just his third at-bat this season as the Commodores (42-17), who trailed 6-2 early and won a game that lasted 4 hours and 58 minutes.

Matt Mirabal homered for Illinois State (31-23) to tie it in the seventh after Vanderbilt went on top in the sixth on homers by Aaron Westlake and Joe Loftus.

Louisvulle 11, Saint Louis 2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Andrew Clark went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Louisville.

It was the Cardinals' first game without coach Dan McDonnell, who is serving a three-game suspension as a result of his interaction with an umpire during the Big East tournament.

Saint Louis (33-28) led 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning after back-to-back home runs by Danny Brock and Jon Myers off Cardinals starter Derek Self.

Louisville (49-12) responded with 10 unanswered runs. The Cardinals play Vanderbilt on Saturday. Saint Louis faces Illinois State.

Tempe Regional

Hawaii 4, San Diego 3

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Sean Montplaisir scored the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning when a pitch glanced off the helmet of Pi'ikea Kitamura.

Montplaisir doubled with one out for the Rainbows (34-26). After a hit by pitch, a groundout and an intentional walk, Kitamura was hit by Matt Thomson (1-3).

Second-seeded San Diego (36-21) tied it 3-3 in the eighth without getting a hit. Kevin Muno was hit by reliever Lenny Linsky (4-0), was sacrificed to second, took third on a groundout and scored on an error by second baseman Kolten Wong.

Arizona State 6, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Merrill Kelly shut down Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Kole Calhoun hit a three-run homer to pace Arizona State.

The Sun Devils (48-8) will play Hawaii in the winners' bracket Saturday, while Wisconsin-Milwaukee (33-25) faces San Diego in an elimination game.

Kelly (10-2) worked eight innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and three hits while walking three and striking out eight. Only three balls reached the outfield and he had five 1-2-3 innings.

Fullerton Regional

New Mexico 9, Stanford 5

FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) -- Chris Juarez had three hits and three RBIs as New Mexico rallied for a win.

The Lobos (38-20) won their first NCAA regional game since 1962, their last tournament appearance.

Reliever Jason Oatman allowed one run and three hits in 3 1-3 innings to earn his first victory of the season.

Rafael Neda's homer gave the Lobos a 1-0 lead in the first. Gaffney hit a solo homer and Ben Crowe added a two-run shot to put Stanford (31-24) ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the inning.

New Mexico plays the winner of Minnesota and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday and Stanford plays the loser in an elimination game.

Minnesota 3, Cal State Fullerton 1

FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) -- Seth Rosin scattered three hits in eight innings as Minnesota upset top-seeded Cal State Fullerton.

Rosin had seven strikeouts as the Golden Gophers (31-28) earned their 12th victory in 14 games and play New Mexico on Saturday.

The Titans (41-16) had eight straight games and 23 of their past 25. Now they face an elimination game against Stanford.

Scott Matyas worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

Los Angeles Regional

LSU 11, UC Irvine 10

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Trey Watkins hit a two-run double with the bases loaded and two outs in the 11th inning to rally LSU.

The Anteaters (37-20) took a 10-9 lead in the top of the 11th on Francis Larson's squeeze bunt. Larson also had a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the eighth.

The Tigers (41-20) rallied with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Austin Nola walked, Alex Edward singled and Leon Landry walked to load the bases for Watkins.

LSU plays the winner of Kent State and UCLA on Saturday and UC Irvine plays the loser.

UCLA 15, Kent State 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Gerrit Cole pitched five innings of one-hit ball, Chris Giovinazzo knocked in three runs and UCLA beat Kent State.

UCLA (44-13) moves into the winners' bracket Saturday against second-seeded LSU (41-20).

Kent State (39-24) will meet UC Irvine in an elimination game.

After Cole (10-2) shut down Kent State, four UCLA relievers held the Flashes to seven hits.

Kent State fell to 7-19 in NCAA play. Starter Robert Sabo (6-5) lasted 2 2-3 innings, giving up seven runs on four hits with three bases on balls and three hit betters.
