ALBANY, Ga. -- The driver of a Chevrolet Malibu suffered a gunshot wound to the neck at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 3100 block of Crepe Myrtle Court, according to Albany Police Department reports.
The driver, Rico Fields, 31, was in fair condition at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Fields' passenger, Clayton McKinley, 25, suffered injury when the gunman hit him in the head with his handgun, APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said.
McKinley was discharged from the hospital, the hospital spokeswoman said.
The victims were in the Malibu when they were attacked by the gunman.
The gunman smashed McKinley in the face with the handgun and then shot Fields, according to Banks.
Trying to get away, Fields drove into a water main. He then ran to a neighbor for help. The gunman fled on foot, police said.
"What is suspected to be marijuana was found at the scene in the road," Banks said. "The (Albany-Dougherty) Drug Unit came out to handle that portion of the investigation. There is no word on any charges pertaining to that part of the investigation."
The gunman was described as a black, 6-foot-tall man. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and blue hat.
