Clerk foils convenience store robbery attempt

ALBANY, Ga. -- Three gunmen fled the College Corner convenience store at about 2:20 a.m. Friday when a clerk fought back, an Albany Police Department report stated.

"Three black male suspects, all three armed with handguns, entered the store and demanded money," APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said. "All three had their heads and faces covered."

That didn't scare Harris Butt, a clerk at the store with his brother Salemon Butt. He grabbed one of the robbers' guns and began to struggle with the gunman.

The move took the robber by surprise, Harris Butt said, and the thieves fled without any money. And the clerk offered a message for anyone who tries to rob the store at 2217 Gillionville Road.

"The message I'm trying to send is that if you come to rob us, I'll kill you," Butt said. "If they are arrested, they'll go to jail for a couple of months. Kill them."

All three suspects fled in a gray late-model four-door vehicle. The suspects were described as young and small in build, Banks said.

The foiled robbery comes after two other convenience stores were robbed, one after the other, by three gunmen in the early hours of June 7. The robbers got away from those Flash Foods stores with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes in a 1990s model green Honda.

Police have not confirmed that the robberies at 2701 Gillionville Road and 2447 N. Slappey Blvd. are related to the attempted robbery at College Corner.
