Don't look now, but The Albany Herald has hired another Daniel.

Daniel Kay, a Texas native, joined The Herald's sports staff this week as its newest member to join sports editor Danny Aller and veteran sports writer Mike Phillips, who joined The Herald in January after working for the Miami Herald for 20-plus years.

Kay, a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, comes to Albany from Fort Worth, Texas, having worked most recently at the nationally renowned, award-winning Fort Worth Star-Telegram for over four years, doing everything from writing and designing to copy editing.

"We're excited that the great city of Albany and The Herald's award-winning sports section has once again been able to attract and hire a talent such as Daniel Kay," Aller said. "We anticipate Daniel making an already great sports section even better."

Kay will take over the vacant beat that focuses heavily on The Herald's dynamic local college sports programs, including Albany State, Darton College, Albany Tech, Georgia Southwestern, Andrew College and South Georgia Tech. He will also be helping out Phillips, The Herald's primary high school writer, with the in-depth and far-reaching prep sports coverage Southwest Georgia's readers have come to rely on and expect during the last few years. Kay will also assist with the Albany Quails, the area's newest minor-league baseball team that will begin its inaugural season later this month.

"It's a big change for me, but I'm excited," said Kay, who relocated to Albany with his wife, Jenn. "I'm really looking forward to this opportunity to show The Herald and the people of Albany what I can bring to the table. I think it's a great fit, and can't wait to start writing."
