ALBANY, Ga. -- Discussion at the Dougherty County Commission meeting this morning is sharply divided over whether scarce funding should be directed to the Flint RiverQuarium or Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful.
The county has been supporting the RiverQuarium at the level of $250,000, but cut that support out this year in a budget that includes reductions in local supplements paid to state-paid employees, no raises for county employees, higher employee insurance premiums and five furlough days.
The idea was broached last week that funding for KADB could be redirected to the aquarium.
Also, the county and city of Albany are negotiating on a deal that could free up some funding for the RiverQuarium or other projects. The county would cut costs for city demolition project materials deposited in the landfill in exchange for $80,000-$90,000 in funding.
