Darton College Athletics is having a birthday party, and it's up to the people of Albany to pick the guests of honor.

After 20 years of intercollegiate athletics, Darton College is recognizing outstanding contributors in the program's history by creating the Darton College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Although the athletic department is relatively young, it has had outstanding performers and supporters over the years, whose contributions the college said deserve to be remembered.

"It's an exciting opportunity," said Mike Kiefer, the Darton College athletic director. "You know, 20 years of athletics might not seem like a long time to a lot of people, but we've had some great teams, great players and great coaches. It's nice to finally give them a little of the attention they deserve."

To determine which individuals will be part of this year's inaugural class, the college is accepting nominations from anyone who fills out a nomination form and submits it before September 1. Nominees may be former Darton coaches, athletes, teams or supporters who have given significant contribution to the college's athletic department.

Individuals nominated in the student athlete category may not have competed in Darton athletics for the last five years, but nominees may be living or deceased. All nominations will be kept on file for 10 years for future consideration.

After the nomination period is over, there will be a selection process involving committees composed of Darton College officials and volunteers. Selection will be based on a variety of factors, such as athletic achievement, academic achievement, community service, leadership and success after Darton.

Kiefer said there is no set limit on the number of inductees each year, but it will probably be a relatively small number, in order to "give them the attention they deserve."

"Some years, we'll have two to three inductees," Kiefer said. "Other years, it may be more."

The exact date for the induction ceremony hasn't been set yet, but is expected to be sometime during the winter months.

Darton began its first year of intercollegiate athletics with only four sports, but has grown to a total of 11 sports and approximately 250 student-athletes yearly.
