Sylvester mother shoots son after he beat her

SYLVESTER, Ga. -- A mother shot her son to death after he beat her and the mother of his son at a home on the 800 block of Isabella Street Tuesday night, said Sylvester Police Department Chief Alfred Anderson.

Chris Bunn, 28, died at about 9 p.m. Tuesday after his mother, Brenda Haire, shot him in the chest with a small-caliber handgun, Anderson said.

The shooting was in defense of herself, Kayla Roberts, 25, the mother of Bunn's year-old son, and the toddler, Anderson added.

"No charges have been filed at this time. This was a family violence situation. The beating went on for a few hours," Anderson said. "He held them against their will with a long gun."

Bunn and Roberts had fought through the day at 803 N. Isabella St. with the violence escalating from oral abuse to physical beating, Anderson said. Bunn eventually took the women and his son hostage, he said.

The weapon used by Bunn to hold the hostages could have been either a rifle or a shotgun, Anderson said. When Bunn started to strike Roberts with a candlestick holder, Haire fired one shot.

Bunn collapsed in the doorway with a fatal wound to his chest, officers said. Authorities began CPR upon arrival to no avail. The shooting remains under investigation, Anderson said.

Bunn's body was sent to a crime lab for an autopsy. Roberts, her son and Haire are with family members in the area.
