ALBANY. Ga. -- Thanks to a called in tip to Crime Stoppers, a woman who stole an elderly woman's checks and forged them for thousands of dollars is in jail, said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Department spokeswoman.

Wanted in connection with the crime since June 3, Santennial Elaine Harris, 34, of Albany, was arrested 9 a.m. at 615 West Society Ave. by Dougherty County Sheriff's Office deputies, Banks said. Her last known address on June 16 was 1408 Colquitt Ave., about three miles from where she was arrested.

"She is charged with 15 counts of forgery and a probation violation," a Dougherty County jail spokeswoman said. "She has no bail."

Banks did not release the name of the 78-year-old woman who police said Harris victimized.

"The family of an elderly Lee County woman, who suffers from Alzheimer's reported that Harris stole, forged and cashed multiple checks that belonged to the 78-year-old," Banks said. "The 15 checks totaled several thousands of dollars and were cashed at an Albany bank."
