LAGRANGE -- The Monroe High School boys' season ended Wednesday night after a loss against undefeated LaGrange, 45-44, in the second round of the GHSA Class AAA playoffs.

Down by one late, the Tornadoes had the ball and went inside to Brandon Blakely, who missed. Then, LaGrange's Jamius Gansby came down with the rebound with two seconds left and ran out the clock as Monroe was unable to foul.

The Tornadoes' season ends at 25-3.

Monroe was down, 40-32, at the start of the fourth quarter but responded with a 10-1 run during the first two minutes of the period and went up, 42-41, on a Ted Hosley basket with 5:58 left in the game. The Tornadoes only scored two more points the rest of the way, and LaGrange's Royal Thomas gave his team the lead for good, 43-42.

Alexander Hunt and Brandon Blakely led Monroe with nine points each.

The Lady Tornadoes blew a 12-point first-quarter lead in the loss. The Lady Grangers, during their stretch, outscored Monroe, 21-14, and 14-7, during the second and third quarters and then delivered the crucial blow in the fourth -- an 18-9 run to close the game. Monroe (14-16) was led by Shaniqua Young's 18 points, followed by Davone Anduze's 15 and Lakeisha Jackson's 13.

What made LaGrange's fourth-quarter run even more dramatic was this -- LaGrange only led, 48-46, when the final quarter started. A Jessica Burks trey moved the Lady Tornadoes within three, but an 8-1 run put coach Cheryl Cheek's Monroe girls away for good.
